Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees

But it certainly grows on banana bread!  Well, at least it did for Navy Blue Dress and I while we were doing our project for English class together.

Goodness, there is so much to say about what we did for this project.  You already know what we did and why, and if not you can go look at past posts to find out, but it’s hard to sum up all of our memories and experiences in doing this together but if one thing is for sure, I was sad when it was over. Only until I realized that just because it was over for school didn’t have to mean that it was over for us or the people that we are helping by donating the money.

Even though I previously said that money was “growing on banana bread” for us but I was just making a funny pun because although we made over 200 dollars it would be wrong for me to  insinuate that it was easy or was only a loaf away.  We definitely got rejected by people more than once but it didn’t stop us and if it had then we wouldn’t have been able to meet some of the wonderful people we did.

Navy Blue Dress and I didn’t have to get together to make and sell banana bread very many times to make as much money or have as much fun as we did.  I would say that what we set out to do was accomplished and it gave us a lot of experience in going door to door and in being shut down or happily welcomed.

If we do do something in the future I would love to put up signs at our old middle school and our high school and other places so people can order online and then we can go and deliver the food, this time more than just banana bread, and collect the money there and then donate that.

I hope you have a lovely day and eat something yummy.

Only 14 More Days

There are only 14 more days until the end of school and believe me when I tell you that it could not come sooner.  If I have anything to say about AP English 3 this year it’s that I’m glad that I have had this experience but I don’t want to say that I liked it or not because this year was too stressful and not good for me that I don’t want to say that this class was bad because it wasn’t but this year makes it feel like all of my classes were.

I wish that I could have gotten more feedback on my essay like notes or comments when he returns them to us and I think it would have been really fun to more having fun with english in class instead of read, analyze, discuss, fall asleep, but that’s okay.  I am really glad that my best friend, Navy Blue Dress, had the same class with me.  I don’t remember a lot of specifics that happened this year but I didn’t like any of the books we read this year and my teacher is even having us read one now!  I just hope that he gives us a simple plain-old test on it instead of doing a project or seminar or discussion but one can only hope.

That’s really it about this year but the most important thing out of all this is that Navy Blue Dress and I only have 14 more days!  It’s like I just want to yell at all of the authorities keeping us there one day longer: Please Let Us Out!  But in a nice way of course.  Hahahaha.

Well, have a good rest of your school year if you’re not out already because then I’m jealous of you, but not when you have to go back to school in the beginning of August.

Wow

Last night Navy Blue Dress and I went to this project showcase after school.  You know how Navy Blue Dress and I are doing the banana bread project?  Well, you got to choose what you did for you projects and the showcase was to see what other people had done for their project.  We helped set up everything and afterwards people started setting their things up.  The people at tables had more of a walk-around and see what each project is about and then there were also seven or so groups that presented in front of everybody.  We had a lot of fun and some of the projects and people’s ideas were impressive and/or creative and fun.  The only problem was that the presentations were taking too long and we had already been there for three hours not including school.

Overall, it was neat to see all of the projects and we also got extra credit for our class by doing this.  We had no expectations when we went since we didn’t really know what to expect.  I also had a problem, or something working in my mind because if we were to present or even be at one of the tables it seems so simple or plain to say that we make homemade banana bread, sell it door-to-door, and then donate the money.  The problem is that it is so much more than that between meeting both rude and lovely people and everything that we’re learning while doing this.  I didn’t know how we would be able to express that to anyone though and have them truly understand.  I told Navy Blue Dress and she agreed with me and I said that we should do something bigger or something to show people its worth or even go along with our idea of selling things at school.  We don’t know what to do but the awesome thing about our project is that it doesn’t ever have to stop.

If you have any ideas to help with this conundrum then it would help so much!

Be good humans.

Not Only Valentine’s Day

One thing incredible that the Grapes Of Wrath show is how to give love freely and in different forms.  And that none of what I am about to talk about has to only take place on Valentine’s Day.

The Oakies, in the book, never hesitate to give to the next stranger even if they have nothing to give.  They understand that they way to survive is a team effort and to keep everyone afloat.  You not only give to someone else but you must do it with your whole heart.  The people and the Joads don’t give grudgingly or half-heartedly but they would never think to keep from others what they can keep for themselves.  One really good example is when Ma has made breakfast for the family and she has cleaned everything and put it away and when someone comes walking down and stops to say ‘Good Morning’, she offers coffee and breakfast, both of which have been put away, dishes clean, and are in very short supply.  It’s even more awesome that these people were brought up that way and they are teaching their children the same things.

Although the Oakies tried to give freely and by doing this giving love and generosity, the people already living in California were hard-pressed and was trying to take everything from the Oakies because they wanted the Oakies to leave.  The funny thing about this is that if they hasd just treated them fairly and like descent human beings then the Oakies would probably have been able to support they family and make money quickly and move back home or to another state to start life over.  Instead, the Oakies were forced to not only stay in California but roam the land as well while they would get enough to only continue to move from place to place on an never ending cycle.

You see, one group of people have everything but are unhappy and angry while the other has nothing and lives to give more and more and are happy to have their family beside them and strangers, who quickly become friends, all around them.  I feel like more and more people these days are starting to view the world as a every-man-for-himself when that is exactly why we get problems like the Love Canal, Pollution, Bankruptcy, Crimes, and so many more.  It’s kind of funny actually because Capitalism is based on the ability to improve one’s situation and better oneself but we tend to loose sight of other people and focus only on ourselves and then blame the system.

Don’t forget about those around you.  Don’t be self-centered and hang your head in the corner while you pity yourself while someone needs you help and can’t do it on their own even if it is just to make them smile or take them out and get their kids off of it for a little while.

Let them know that you won’t leave them and you will help them get through it.  Extend yourself for others and you’ll be amazed at how far they’ll go for you in return.  Ma did this for the family that they found along the road and never wanted to stop helping them.

Be good humans.

To Infinity and Beyond!

Okay, so I have the perfect idea for what Navy Blue Dress and I should do next for our banana bread project.  The requirement for whatever our project could have been was that you are supposed to make a positive difference in your community.  To add to what we are doing already, making and selling homemade banana bread from door to door on weekends, I had a thought that we could make something easy like cookies or muffins and tell people at school what we’re doing and ask them if they would like to preorder some.  For instance, we could give them a flier explaining what we’re doing so that they can read that on their own and give to other people and we can ask them if they would like to pay for whatever amount of cookies or muffins and then tell them that they will have it brought to them at school on a certain day.  Get it?  I might not be explaining myself very clear but I want this to work and am excited but hope that this doesn’t overtake Navy Blue Dress and I like the picture of Woody above.

So far, as far as the food options go for people to “pre-order”, we have thought of cookies and muffins.  We don’t want something that is hard to carry and keep nice like cupcakes and we figured that if we tried to sell banana bread that people may not know what it is and if they do they probably don’t want a whole loaf of it, even if it is a mini one.  If you have any other ideas besides these two then we would greatly appreciate it and will respond back.

I hope I am not geting myself too excited over nothing because Navy Blue Dress and I are still just talking about this as a total up in the air idea.  However eager and enthusiastic I am about this idea, I only want to do it if Navy Blue Dress wants to do it honestly and not only because I want to do it.  Because otherwise it wouldn’t be as enjoyable.  We would also have to be able to really work together because if one of use doesn’t have time to make it with the other person for some reason before the date to give the “customers” their goodies then we would just need to make sure that we are staying in constant communication and working together.  Which that should really be no problem for us since we’re best friends and see each other every day for at least 5 hours.

Whether or not this idea of mine will go through or even if it does if it’ll be successful, Navy Blue Dress and I will still have tons of fun together making the banana bread and maybe even giving some to my mom to sell at her work.  The picture below is me dancing with Navy Blue Dress  when we make banana bread!

Go have some delicious food and dance.  Be good humans.

Grapes of Irony

Grapes of Irony, well it’s really Grapes of Wrath but the first one is better since it serves a point for this post.  As we are reading The Grapes of Wrath for class right now I am realizing how ironic everything is, not to mention twisted, miserable, and desperate.  For instance, the big businesses, created by the people outside of the South, push the Southerners out of their land to make more money.  Well, they don’t realize that those people they just took over was their money that they were taking as well.  Obviously the “Oakies” had to move somewhere else to survive and make money so they went to the West and other areas that had pushed them out in the first place.  However the oakies were viewed as vermin and bugs that needed to be pushed away and rid of.  To sum up, the North and West pushed out the South and took the South’s money so the South moved North and (mostly) West to make money but it was somehow wrong for the South to share profits in the North and South even though they had liked the Oakies completely out.  It’s also very hypocritical and selfish because everyone was feeling the pains of the Great Depression during this time period and for the N and W to do this to someone else and then be appalled when the S tried to move.  Where did the N and W expect or think that the people would go.  What, they would just stay home and volunteer to slowly die from dehydration and starvation?  Talk about being naive or so self-centered and closed-viewed as to not think that something drastic would happen after they did something drastic.  I’m going to be all sciencey and say that with every action causes an equal and opposite reaction.

Just think about this and remember to be good humans

Just Around the Corner

around-the-corner-19059-1920x1080

I know that this doesn’t seem like it’ll be about banana bread or anything happy for that matter but just trust me for a moment.  Recently I have been more quiet, exhausted, and anxiety ridden because my schedule is so busy that I have to try to figure out how to fit sleep in.  So I am naturally enjoying the things I wouldn’t get excited about and they are what get me from day to day.  I have had a few people ask me if anything was wrong or if I was mad at them and I assured them that they were not the problem.  But!  I cannot wait for this weekend because me and Navy Blue Dress are going to make banana bread again this weekend and even though I enjoyed it a lot before, I am incredibly excited about it and am looking forward to doing it with my best friend.  Especially since it will be her birthday in 12 days!  I would also really like to tell every single one of you that even though it sounds redundant and cliché, I believe in you and more importantly, believe in yourself because I know you can do it and when you believe you can do it you’re already half way there.  I am also glad to say that I will have my bestie there to also make sure I don’t eat all of the banana bread before we even sell it!

Have an amazing day and got do something you love with someone you love. ❤

Teachers and Passing Notes

No, no, I did not get in trouble in class recently for passing notes or anything like that.  For once, it was the teacher who gave me a note and it wasn’t to be sent up to the office or another form of punishment.  It was an odd but considerate and thoughtful note.  It’s also a bit mysterious because I don’t quite understand my English teacher and I am not quite sure on what he meant.

I put this particular picture up because first of all it is incredibly worth of an “awww” and was too adorable to resist and the note that I received from my teacher had a little sticker on it that had the letter ‘Mm’ and a tiny mouse.  I think I might even put a picture of the note up here for you guys to see.  Yes, I think I will.

It was nice to get this because lately things have been kind of dreary and stressful and I am very glad that for whatever reason that my teacher decided to give me it, he did.  Interesting quirks in a day make you feel like you are not just going through the motions of life and they revive you and wake you back up a little bit too in the sense of changing from robot to human once again.

The note also did have a funky looking crown thing on it with a smiley face and on a side note the picture above has made me want a tiny mouse pet but only the ones online are always this cute.

Here is the note from my teacher.

No More Homework

This really is a terrible subject to talk about but let’s do it anyways.

The topic of senior year was what we were talking and reading about recently and the goods and bars of making it optional or getting rid of it.  I think this would not only be interesting to try but to se what happens and if it is worth it or not.  I think people, especially teachers and administrations, should rethink giving kids homework, especially before high school.  For so long it had just been the social norm and acceptable for kids to have several hours of homework a night, even kindergarteners.  I don’t want to nit pick on times because that isn’t the main problem.  I understand that the point of homework for teachers is to help kids further understand and learn.  However if children are trying to get homework merely so that it is done and out of the way then why aren’t teachers realizing that this isn’t a “normal” kid problem and they are just overreacting.  To stop and think, “Hey, there might be a logical reason that these two things may have a connection to each other; homework isn’t helping them and they hate it.”  Even if the child is not crying over homework or drowning in misery, they still do not like it but it has always been viewed as the teacher’s job to give homework and collect it and grade it.

I think this social norm should be changed or at least experienced because there isn’t one study proving that homework gives any of the benefits it claims to for kids below high school.

If you want to hear more about this and laugh a little too, then go look at some of these videos or just search for “Alfie Kohn” on Youtube.  Links:

Maybe, Just Maybe

For today I wanted to share something exciting and a little neat with you, if that’s all right.

Next year will be my last year in high school and the time is coming for us to choose our classes that we want to take next year.  I pretty much had it down; three AP’s, math, and food and nutrition.  Recently however, I learned that we have a new class called physiology and it is all about the body, science wise not health wise.  Shocked was I when I heard this because this subject was the only thing I found interesting in freshman year biology and I still remember things I learned about the body that year.  Now I was in a pickle because I did not want to have six classes next year because that is a lot with three AP’s and I did not want to have to stay through lunch if I could help it.  We are required to take at least five classes next year and my issue was that I could not choose between food and nutrition and physiology.  Not that you have the same interests as I do but I am sure you can have been in a predicament like this before.  I finally decided that food and nutrition would be best because I am excited about it and I love working with my hands, especially when it comes to food.  Another thing, this is a class that will help me for the rest of my life because it is obvious that there will not always be someone there to make all of your food for you and you will have to know what you are doing, and maybe have some fun with it even.  One of the big reasons why I ended up deciding on food and nutrition was thanks to a very enjoyable and unique ten-minute “speech” on the class.  I wrote the word ‘speech’ the way I did because I liked it so much and was caught up in it that it did not feel like a speech by another teacher, but rather something greater.  I was not so much her use of big words or a super-smiley attitude but her excitement to even talk about it and share what it was like.  It sounds silly and unimportant but when teachers love to teach and do it with true heart, that is when they teach students how to love to learn.

I am telling you all of this because I wanted to give you some hope or support in whatever you are doing and do not think that it will get better.  I can understand to some degree how you might feel, especially if you are another student trying to just get through high school.  Being in high school has made me not enjoy school and really become a bitter and syndical person about everything and I know this because it tears me up inside to see this change in me because that is not who I am.  My goal then in high school was to just finish it and get it out of the way, like a grueling task of picking up spilled salt or trying to catch pillow feathers in the wind.  Your high school years are supposed to be looked back on with happy smiles and a good remembrance and an enjoyment of going through them as well but for me it was a get it done and move on to bigger and better things.  I did not realize the potential, however small or big, I had to making my last year one that I did not want to end instead of counting the minutes till graduation.  Even though I was only encouraged by two classes that I was eager to do, I am grateful that I had them to show me that I can make my last year however I want it to be.  I saw that possibility of what could be and the only person who has the power to take me there was me.  And I have decided on savoring and delighting in senior year.

I hope that you find the good in everything you do even if it is hiding so much from you that you need help from someone else to find it.  Do not give up and please realize that you can decide on exhilaration or tediousness.  See what you have before you before it is too late.

Have a good day and go tell someone that you love them and make them smile.
