Everything Ends

Hello everybody!

We are coming to the end of the school year and with that, mine and Gold Glitter Pump’s project has ended. In total we raised $207! I had a lot of fun doing this project, and it was even better that I got to do it with my best friend. I learned that you really have to plan out when you are going to do things, and you have to stick those dates, or else nothing will ever get done. I also learned how to deal with other people in a polite way, even if they are extremely rude to you.

All in all I had a lot of fun with this project, and I might even continue doing it. I guess that is a really good plus to this project; that since these projects are supposed to help others and give our point of view on things, they don’t have to stop when the project is due.

Well I hope that all of you that are coming up to the end of the school year have a good time! Good luck on finals!

And I am going to put this photo in because it is from my all time favorite tv show, and it has something to do with this post. Hope you like it!

That’s Enough

We still aren’t don’t with The Great Gatsby in class and I only found that out after my English teacher thought it would be a good idea to have a discussion and read an article about it.  We already had to do the BRAWL and that was enough, more than enough actually.  I would have preferred to just have taken a test on the book instead of doing this but I am in AP so what he says goes.  I would just like to politely disagree with what he says though.  At least the year is half over and I can read more AP books for the AP exam next year; fun all around me.  I think the more we talk about the book the more I don’t like it.  It’s like setting your alarm to wake you up to your favorite song because you will hate that song really quickly since that’s what drives you to get up from your pleasant dreams and comfy sleep and wake up.  I’m sure there are benefits to discussing and answering questions about The Great Gatsby in class but I think you can only analyze something so much before you don’t see any new connections or points of interests.  It’s the same reason why it’s a good idea to have someone else read your essay or whatever before you turn it in since you have read it so many times that it’s hard for you to see the grammar errors and helpful hints.

It’s important to know when to move on and when it’s worth it to try something new.

21 Things that will be gone in our schools in the next 10 years

school2

First of all as always, how is everyone? Hope you are doing well. Are you all excited about Christmas? I know I am!

http://blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2011/03/21-things-that-will-be-obsolete-by-2020/

Ok so I found this article and it is just so interesting. Some things I am ready to be out of school, others, well can we just hang on to them for a bit longer. Like how they say that paperback books will be gone and it will all be digital. Look I have nothing against using your little iPads for games and music and such but there is a reason that books have lasted in the form that they have for so long: they work. And another thing, I love the smell of books and being able to tell how far I am by how thick the pages are, not a little bar that tells me how much I have read. So to say in the least I will be fighting that one tooth and nail.

Also I do not agree with taking Algebra 1 out of high school, and this is coming from someone who took Geometry in freshman year, so I never took Algebra 1 in high school. Some kids just aren’t ready for Geometry in their freshman year, there’s nothing wrong with that, just let it be.

Yay for no homework! I have yet to meet a kid that says they like homework. This article says I should learn more of what I want to learn and have no homework? I am on board!

I am perfectly fine with having no AP tests and no SATs. Ugh, they are so stressful. I am taking 2 AP classes this year, and wow they are stressful, but I do like that if I pass, I don’t have to take that class in college. Digital portfolio it is.

No lockers?! Where am I supposed to put all my stuff? If it will all be on an iPad, well then I guess we don’t need lockers, but otherwise I hope they stay.

I really like the whole centralized institutions thing. If I don’t have to go to school everyday that would be awesome. It actually sounds fun to go out into the community to learn and not just be stuck behind a desk taking notes and then cramming the night before the test.

I am hoping so much that cafeteria food will be out the window. I mean, come on, some of that stuff is just plain disgusting. I never see the cafeteria workers eating it, so if they won’t eat it, why do we have to? Out with the old and in with the new and better tasting.

So go ahead and click on the link. There are other things on the link than what I  have mentioned on here. Look for the ones that you agree with or don’t. And feel free to post your opinions on any of the things they have stated, hey you can even disagree with me. =)

Hope you all have a good day! Merry early Christmas!

Progress on Project #1

images

Hello!

I know that at first I said that I was doing the “Books to Movies” thing but Gold Glitter Pumps and I realized that with both of us doing separate projects we were still helping each other out a ton! So what we decided to do was we would both work on gold Glitter Pump’s idea together (if you are not sure what it is we have a page about it on this blog. It is at the top and called Eat to Cure. Go check it out). So far we have a Facebook page, a Twitter page, a Pinterest account, and a page on this blog for the event. We are both really excited about this and really looking forward to it. The one thing I am scared about though, is that no one will show up. But you know what? When things like that happen we have to be able to pick our selves up fast and be able to improvise to still get what we need to get done. In light of that, Gold Glitter Pump and I have agreed that if no one shows up we will be making food and selling it and still giving all the profits to Trekstock. I am really hoping this all works out.

Please go check out all the stuff we have up and find out what this is all about. If you have anything to say about this we would love to hear it. Thank you so much!

A Story in 6 Words

Hello everyone! How was your weekend?

Last week in class we did six word stories. Now because we just finished The Scarlet Letter we did it concerning that. I think I am getting a little ahead of myself…I should explain what a six word story is. Well…it’s exactly what it says. Though it would be kind of pointless to just put “I went to the grocery store” as your story. You have to try to pull out emotions from people. It all started by someone challenging Ernest Hemingway to write a story in six words. This is what he came up with:

Some say that this short story was his best work. For me it’s so sad, because why would someone have baby shoes that would never have been worn? What happened to the baby? I don’t even want to think about that.

Ok! Now that you know what a six word story is we can get back to what I was saying. So..Scarlet Letter…six word story in class. Caught up? Awesome!

So here were the four stories I came up with for the Scarlet Letter:

1) Pain in heart, no one sees.

2) Revenge for the long forgotten one. (This one is my favorite!!!)

3) A hidden symbol causes much pain.

4) The little child no one sees.

Gold Glitter Pumps came up with these ones for The Scarlet Letter:

1) Guilt or shame, which is worse?

2) She still eventually threw me away.

3) Make the most of every situation.

4) Husband, Scholar, Liar, Plotter, Torturer.

Of course you make a six word story anytime. It doesn’t just have to be concerning a book. What are some six word stories you can think of? Can they evoke as much emotions as Ernest Hemingway’s? As always feedback is welcomed and encouraged! Hope everybody is having a great day!

Twitter Chats

baby-with-computer-200px

Recently in English we have been having discussions about the Scarlet Letter.  Instead of doing a socratic seminar, group discussions, or even small group discussions, we get to do twitter chats with the entire class including our teacher!  Yes, I know what you’re saying, why is so great, well I’ll tell you.  It’s so great because we get to go out of the classroom for a day, talk among friends, and it’s fun because as you’re typing your answer, thirty odd more students are doing the same as well.  It also makes sure that people’s responses are short, only 140 characters, because when you do in class discussions they can get pretty long.  Trust me, I know.  If you are scared of speaking out, or just don’t like it, then this is especially good for you because they can read it if they want to and you’re not as pressured with the whole class’s eyes on you.  You don’t have to sit there waiting for the person to be done talking either because everyone is adding to the same conversation at the same time and this helps ideas to flow more fluently and quickly and more people get to speak this way.  For me, they help me understand what we’re talking about a little bit more as well because if I put my answer up, the my teacher’s question, and see someone else’s and think that it’s just amazing, then I can favorite it, retweet it, or even comment on it to tell them what I think.  It also gives you helpful criticism on how you view and understand the book.

All I’m saying is that this is really neat and effective in many ways and I’m going to actually miss English class after this year because I don’t know if my teacher next year will do this.  I hope you do this at your school, and if not, then I hope you can convince him/her to let you try it.

That’s all for now!  Tell me what you think and what you’re experiences were if you have done this before.

Books to Movies

Unknown-3

Hi everyone! As I am pretty sure Gold Glitter Pumps has told you, in our English class we are doing DIY projects. For mine, I have almost decided what I am going to do.

Ok, so a lot of the times when I start reading a book later on a find out that it is going t be turned into a movie. When I first find this out I am extremely excited. I can’t wait to see the story brought to life. But there is also always a part of me that is scared and doesn’t want it being turned into a movie. I know that there will be things that don’t follow the story at all, ruin a scene for me, or that the people they choose for the characters are all wrong. Of course I go and see the movie anyway, because I love the book and am obsessed with the story and no matter what the book and movie will have a special place in my heart. Though after every movie I see that was originally a book, there is at least one week of me being completely upset( and everyone around me knowing it) at things the movie didn’t do correctly. And yes I do understand that when you film a movie from a book somethings will be different or not even in the movie because it is hard to transfer to the screen or they don’t have enough money, but most of the stuff that I complain about is stuff that I don’t think would be that hard to change (take out a scene and put in another one, add a couple scenes, choose different people for the characters, outfits some characters wear(yes, in some stories that is very important), etc.).

All that being said what my idea for this DIY project is to take a book that has already been made into a movie and is well known ( I was thinking The Hunger Games) and to film a couple scenes myself how I felt they should be filmed. At first I was thinking that I would do a trailer for the movie, but I don’t think that would capture the point I am trying to make. I would most likely do scenes that I don’t think they did right in the movie or scenes that I think they should have added to the movie.

My other idea was to get items from swap meets and garage sales and that sort of thing and to make them into something totally different but something that I need/want. For example right now I really want more bookshelves in my room because I have started to stack them…again. Its really hard to find bookshelves that match my room and at least almost match the bookshelves I already have so that is why I thought of making my own. I do like this idea but I think that I like the other one even more. Please tell me what you think.

Please give me feedback on what you think about this idea. Praise and criticism are welcome.

P.S. Do you like the decorations for Halloween? We were thinking that we would try to change up the backgrounds for the whole month that some holidays are in. The background will go back to the teal with balloons on months that don’t have holidays.

Family-Night

“Men to the left! Women to the right!”

These words changed Elizer’s life forever. When he heard these words he ended up never seeing his sisters or mother again. This scene really struck me because I don’t know what I would do without my family and to have all that was going on in his life and then losing most of his family, I don’t know if I would be able to deal with that.

City of Bones

I am super excited for this movie to come out. I am reading the series right now and I am on the third book. I am seriously obsessed with this series. If I could live in the shadow hunter world I would. This is the trailer for the first movie in the series- City of Bones. It comes out sometime in August. Hope you enjoy.
