Here We Go Again

Hello everyone! Hope you all had an amazing Easter and got to spend it with those you love.

On Thursday in English class we are going to be writing an in-class essay. This essay is going to be a style analysis on The Grapes of Wrath, which we have just finished reading. My problem with this isn’t that we have to write an essay, its the whole in class part of it that I don’t like; and its not just this essay, I have always hated in-class essays. I don’t like them because they don’t give you as much time to think and develop your ideas. I am the type of person where I don’t see all of the writing style very easily, so writing this in class is a bit of a challenge. My teacher says that this is in part to prepare us for the AP exam, where we will have to write a style analysis essay in a limited amount of time. I completely get that part of it and am actually thankful that we are getting to practice before we take the exam, but it still scares me to do it.

What do you guys think about in-class essays? Have you ever had to write one?

How About No?

Hello everyone! How are you? Well I hope that everything is fabulous!

Last week in English class we read an essay called Class Dismissed. The essay was all about how the author, Walter Kirn, thinks that senior year of high school is useless and should be done away with. He says how that year of school is just a waiting ground, while the students could actually start college early, go into the work force, or anything else they were planning to do once they got out of high school. Walter Kirn says in his essay that he does not know if anything would be lost if senior year were taken out, because he himself did not go to his senior year of high school. Though what he does say is that when he visited home, all senior year had done for his friends was make one an unwed mother and some “into victims of major car collisions.” I’m not sure I totally agree with Kirn though.

I understand that colleges don’t look at the grades you get in senior year, but they do look at the classes you take to make sure that you are not just slacking off. They do this because they look at the college applications sent in while the students are still in their senior year of high school. If senior year were done away with, wouldn’t that just be pushed back to junior year? All colleges would have to go off of is the students grades from sophomore year (colleges don’t look at grades from freshman year). I already had enough stress in my sophomore year, I don’t think they need to add more by making that the only year being looked at for college. What if you had a bad year? Or semester? You get judged on that and there is next to nothing you can do about it.

Also some people really use their senior year to grow and mature. At 17-18 years old, most people are not ready mature enough to move out and live on their own (I’m not even sure they are mature enough to do that at 19 years old). A parents job is to raise their child to be a good citizen and be able to go off on their own and be successful. You can’t really teach children that stuff until a certain age because they just will not understand it. Heck, most parents are still teaching their kids this stuff at the age they move out now. I’m not saying kids should live with their parents until they are 25 and are living off their parents. I am just saying that parents should be allowed to shape their children into these good people until they become mature.

Kirn says that nothing much will be lost if senior year is hacked off. I wish that was true! I already have so much lined up for my senior year. On top of three or four AP classes, I will be finishing volunteering at a local hospital, and I am thinking that I will be taking a ROP class (these are classes that are meant to help teenagers explore fields of work they are interested in to see of they would be intrigued in doing that as a career). I might also be taking a fun class: cooking maybe? I am using senior year to really get ahead so I don’t have to do so much in college and to explore my options for a career. If senior year were not there I would loose a lot, and I am sure I am not the only one.

I’m sure that there is probably some good things if senior year were to be no more, but this is what I think about it. I feel like these reasons really outweigh, whatever good could come from not having senior year.

What do you guys think about this? Are you pro-senior year or not?

Banana Bread Bakers

Another week has come and gone and more bananas fill the oven and the heavenly aroma of bread fills the air of the house once more.  Navy Blue Dress and I are making more banana bread for the project and it takes some serious self-control to not eat them all.  Some are out of the oven and we are still making more.  However I will not be able to sell them with Navy Blue Dress this time because I have a play tonight, a tournament tomorrow, and then Super Bowl.  I am really upset though that I can’t help her and I made sure that she was okay doing it because I would never push her to do something like that and she said that she wanted to do it so more power to her.

We are going to put some pictures up of us making the banana bread and if you guys want the recipe then comment and like our posts so that we know.  Go eat some bread, watch a movie, and enjoy life.  Love you.  (In a totally friendly way lol.)

That’s Enough

We still aren’t don’t with The Great Gatsby in class and I only found that out after my English teacher thought it would be a good idea to have a discussion and read an article about it.  We already had to do the BRAWL and that was enough, more than enough actually.  I would have preferred to just have taken a test on the book instead of doing this but I am in AP so what he says goes.  I would just like to politely disagree with what he says though.  At least the year is half over and I can read more AP books for the AP exam next year; fun all around me.  I think the more we talk about the book the more I don’t like it.  It’s like setting your alarm to wake you up to your favorite song because you will hate that song really quickly since that’s what drives you to get up from your pleasant dreams and comfy sleep and wake up.  I’m sure there are benefits to discussing and answering questions about The Great Gatsby in class but I think you can only analyze something so much before you don’t see any new connections or points of interests.  It’s the same reason why it’s a good idea to have someone else read your essay or whatever before you turn it in since you have read it so many times that it’s hard for you to see the grammar errors and helpful hints.

It’s important to know when to move on and when it’s worth it to try something new.

The Little Things

Hello my darling.  How are you doing?  Well, let this make your day even better.

A little about me.  I love the little things in life.  Who doesn’t?  It’s what makes everything so special, creative, magical, and definitely nostalgic.  The way the rain sounds when you are going to sleep.  The moment when you come home after buying all of your favorite foods.  How no matter grumpy, tired, or exhausted, you will always have your family there for you.  Waking up to breakfast.  Falling asleep in the car or on the couch and waking up in your bed.  When things go better than planned or expected.  Bumping into a guy and looking up and having your stomach do cartwheels.  Staying at home, reading a good book with some tea and cookies.  No homework.  British accents.  Accents in general.  Holidays with your family.

You get the point.

Progress on Project #2

Hello everyone! How are you? Hope everything is good =)

Now to talk about the English project. Since the last post Gold Glitter Pumps and I have come up with tentative dates (you can see them by going to the Eat to Cure page and clicking the link there). We also are trying to come up with a good poster design and get them out soon enough. In this project we have realized that we are huge procrastinators, but most of the time we don’t mean to. We find something else that is due sooner than this so we do that, and before we know it this due date has come and we don’t have a lot done. Well, I can’t really complain, I would rather learn this now than later in life. There isn’t really much else we have done, so until next time!

A Blog?

Hello! and how is everyone?

Right now I really wanted to talk about why I have a blog. As you might have been able to tell, we (Gold Glitter Pumps, Dark Gray Peacoat(last year), and I) had to start this as a English assignment…and it ended up that Gold Glitter Pump’s and my English teacher this year wanted us to have a blog too. (Sorry if that was all really confusing. We try really to use those names but it is difficult sometimes.) Last year, especially near the end, it started becoming a drag having to get a post out once a week that was always 500+ words and that it has to be thought of in a different way, but honestly I was really excited when my teacher said that we were doing a blog.

Over the summer I was the only one that was continuing the blog (nothing bad meant to the others) and I did that because I wanted to. If you noticed it was more personal things and more well, uneducational things that were posted during the summer.

Now that I am doing this blog once a week again, I realize how much I enjoy doing it. I love writing, I always have and so to be able to write every week and not just on some book we read or something like that is really cool, well at least to me. Also, I am able to put what I think on here. I was never able to keep a diary as a kid no matter how much I wanted to (and believe me I wanted to) so having a blog is almost the same thing to me. I love knowing that people are reading what I say and maybe just maybe I might change somebody’s way of thought, for the better. You don’t know how excited I get even if we only have a small amount of views, I just love seeing that people are looking. When I go and see the countries we have reached it is amazing I just don’t know how to react. I really like when I see that people have come to our blog from somewhere else, because to me that is saying that our blog seemed interesting enough just from a little blurb to see more. And the thing that excites me the most is when people like and comment on my posts. It make me feel so special to know that you took the time to read and to reply or even press the like button.

So yeah, that’s why I have a blog and I know that I would never have had a blog if I hadn’t been assigned it last year, so I am extremely glad I was assigned it (did I just say I was glad I was assigned homework? Wow that’s weird).I think that if any of you feel this way towards anything, then you should do it. If it makes you feel happy then go for it!

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Project Progress 1

Hello my Darlings!

How are you?  Well I hope you guys are having fabulous weekends, even though it’s just about over.  But I am so excited about the project that Navy Blue Dress and I are working on together!  I was really glad and excited when she asked if we should just work together.  But that’s not even the best part because I wanted to make sure that she knew we could do either of our ideas but it made me feel special and loved when she was all “no, I really like your idea and I would like to do it with you”.  Hahahaha.  I sound so dopey but it was one of those cute bestie moments that you giggle at and smile hopelessly.  Well, the project is coming together nicely because I could tell that when we started this it was going to be a lot to put together, an trust me it is, but it’s a good crazy.  So far we have made a Pinterest account, a Facebook page, a Twitter account, and a page on here, which you should totally go and look at it.  If you’re curious at what the project is, or don’t know what I’m talking about then go and look at the home page an click the page that says “Eat To Cure”.  As far as dates go we only have tentative dates right now which we’ll put up on the page so you guys can see them.  I say tentative because for one, we don’t really know how many people show up (I hope we get to see a lot of you there and finally meet some of you beautiful people) and we don’t know if we’ll be busy on the days that we chose either.  If we do change dates though we will definitely give you guys tons of notice in advance so that all of you can still come and be apart of this really exciting thing.  I’ll put the links to all of our separate pages on this post and the page so that you guys can find out more about this and join us even.  You don’t have to make anything, just come down, have some good food with awesome people and maybe even some coffee.

I really hope to meet some our you lovely people, it would seriously like make my life, not just day, but life.  If there’s not enough of you guys on the first one then we won’t be able to do it any longer.  Navy Blue Dress and I will still have fun making our own food and selling it but it’s still so neat to share this with all of you.

Here are the links to the different social media sites I told you that we have created.  Take a look, follow or like them, and share this experience with us because it will only make it more special and better.

Links (click them):

Pinterest.  Facebook.  Twitter.

Comment or like and feel free to ask any questions.  Especially since we’re nowhere near professionals and could use your guyses help and ideas.  Be good humans and keep smiling beautifuls.

Until next time . . .

A Story in 6 Words

Hello everyone! How was your weekend?

Last week in class we did six word stories. Now because we just finished The Scarlet Letter we did it concerning that. I think I am getting a little ahead of myself…I should explain what a six word story is. Well…it’s exactly what it says. Though it would be kind of pointless to just put “I went to the grocery store” as your story. You have to try to pull out emotions from people. It all started by someone challenging Ernest Hemingway to write a story in six words. This is what he came up with:

Some say that this short story was his best work. For me it’s so sad, because why would someone have baby shoes that would never have been worn? What happened to the baby? I don’t even want to think about that.

Ok! Now that you know what a six word story is we can get back to what I was saying. So..Scarlet Letter…six word story in class. Caught up? Awesome!

So here were the four stories I came up with for the Scarlet Letter:

1) Pain in heart, no one sees.

2) Revenge for the long forgotten one. (This one is my favorite!!!)

3) A hidden symbol causes much pain.

4) The little child no one sees.

Gold Glitter Pumps came up with these ones for The Scarlet Letter:

1) Guilt or shame, which is worse?

2) She still eventually threw me away.

3) Make the most of every situation.

4) Husband, Scholar, Liar, Plotter, Torturer.

Of course you make a six word story anytime. It doesn’t just have to be concerning a book. What are some six word stories you can think of? Can they evoke as much emotions as Ernest Hemingway’s? As always feedback is welcomed and encouraged! Hope everybody is having a great day!

Twitter Chats

Recently in English we have been having discussions about the Scarlet Letter.  Instead of doing a socratic seminar, group discussions, or even small group discussions, we get to do twitter chats with the entire class including our teacher!  Yes, I know what you’re saying, why is so great, well I’ll tell you.  It’s so great because we get to go out of the classroom for a day, talk among friends, and it’s fun because as you’re typing your answer, thirty odd more students are doing the same as well.  It also makes sure that people’s responses are short, only 140 characters, because when you do in class discussions they can get pretty long.  Trust me, I know.  If you are scared of speaking out, or just don’t like it, then this is especially good for you because they can read it if they want to and you’re not as pressured with the whole class’s eyes on you.  You don’t have to sit there waiting for the person to be done talking either because everyone is adding to the same conversation at the same time and this helps ideas to flow more fluently and quickly and more people get to speak this way.  For me, they help me understand what we’re talking about a little bit more as well because if I put my answer up, the my teacher’s question, and see someone else’s and think that it’s just amazing, then I can favorite it, retweet it, or even comment on it to tell them what I think.  It also gives you helpful criticism on how you view and understand the book.

All I’m saying is that this is really neat and effective in many ways and I’m going to actually miss English class after this year because I don’t know if my teacher next year will do this.  I hope you do this at your school, and if not, then I hope you can convince him/her to let you try it.

That’s all for now!  Tell me what you think and what you’re experiences were if you have done this before.
