What APs Really Mean

Hello everybody! I hope you are all doing well!

So AP exams are fast approaching, and I am scared out of my mind. I’ve spent all year preparing for these and all I can keep thinking is that I should have started studying sooner. As I am consumed with stress, I looked back at this year. When I signed up for my AP classes I knew they were going to be a lot of work, but I didn’t think I was signing up for THIS much. I mean there are good things that came with being in an AP class, but sometimes it is hard to see that through the piles of homework I have. I love learning these facts and other things and being able to use them and talk to others about them. I enjoy learning…to a degree. AP classes sometimes take learning over that degree. At the point where you are up until midnight doing homework because you have APs coming, homework from your AP classes, and homework form everything else, I can’t seem to see the light at the end of the AP tunnel. Aren’t AP classes supposed to teach us things more in depth so we can go out in the world and use them? Well with all of the work I have, I don’t see much of the world. I always looked at people who stay in all the time to do homework as weird and nerdy, but it looks like I have become one of those people.

With all that being said, I am still taking AP classes next more…I am even taking one more than this year. Sound masochistic? It probably is, but I am looking at all the benefits that I will get from taking these classes. I won’t have to take them college, so that frees my time there. And then there is the fact, that like I said before, I do like to learn. I also love the people in my AP classes. Sometimes people that are in regular classes don’t want to learn and it is distracting to those who do.

I can proudly say that I am an AP student. I like others being proud of me because of the things I am doing. Like anything, APs have their ups and downs, I guess it is just up to each person on what to do.

Just Around the Corner

I know that this doesn’t seem like it’ll be about banana bread or anything happy for that matter but just trust me for a moment.  Recently I have been more quiet, exhausted, and anxiety ridden because my schedule is so busy that I have to try to figure out how to fit sleep in.  So I am naturally enjoying the things I wouldn’t get excited about and they are what get me from day to day.  I have had a few people ask me if anything was wrong or if I was mad at them and I assured them that they were not the problem.  But!  I cannot wait for this weekend because me and Navy Blue Dress are going to make banana bread again this weekend and even though I enjoyed it a lot before, I am incredibly excited about it and am looking forward to doing it with my best friend.  Especially since it will be her birthday in 12 days!  I would also really like to tell every single one of you that even though it sounds redundant and cliché, I believe in you and more importantly, believe in yourself because I know you can do it and when you believe you can do it you’re already half way there.  I am also glad to say that I will have my bestie there to also make sure I don’t eat all of the banana bread before we even sell it!

Have an amazing day and got do something you love with someone you love. ❤

Check That Off the List

Hello everybody! I hope your weekend was amazing! Mine was, I just wish it was longer.

Recently, I have had so much to do. I barely have any free time because I have so much to do. This all makes me stress out a lot and I don’t like to feel stressed out. And if I take a break one day then I am just going to feel more stressed out the next day because I didn’t do anything. Now no, this isn’t just a post to rant about all the stress in my life, its about how I know have one fewer thing to do.

Every week in English class for the past 21 weeks(not including breaks) we have been doing something called morphemes. They are basically a part of a word (i.e. lud, ad, uni, etc.) and when they are in words it can help you figure out the definitions of these words. Every week we would have ten of these and we would have to find a word with one of the morphemes in it and give the definition to that word (you did one of these for each morph). Then you would write ten sentences, one for each word you just looked up. Or later in this whole process we started writing paragraphs, and you had to use at least six of the words. Every three weeks we had a quest (no worth as much as a test, but more than a quiz), so each one would be on thirty morphs; but sometimes old morphs would come up in the quiz.

Like I said, we have done this for the past 21 weeks, and we are finally finished with them and I am so excited about that. Its not that these were hard or anything, but on top of everything else that I have to do, it was just one more thing for me to stress about. It probably doesn’t help that I left all the stuff to do for each of them and studying up until the day before it was due; but most of that wasn’t on purpose. I would either forget about them, or be extremely busy with other stuff that I just had no time. Now this doesn’t mean that I suddenly have a ton of spare time-I wish- but it was nice to hear that we aren’t doing them anymore and it was one less thing for me to stress over.

I’m not sure if teachers, especially AP teachers, understand that we can’t just work all the time. One, its not healthy and two, most kids (and for the most part adults too) don’t want to have to work that long. When teachers go home, they might have to grade some papers or due a few lesson plans, but even those aren’t everyday things. Why do they think that we must have a ton of homework and no free time when they get a ton of free time? Can someone please explain this to me?

Why so many tests?

test

Hello everyone! How are you all? Right now I am drowning in homework and stress and all these tests aren’t making it any easier.

My  school, for the first time in a very long time, is not taking the STAR tests. Just as I was getting excited about this, I found out that all juniors have to take at least part of it anyway. We have to do the EAP (Early Assessment Program) that is at the end of it. It consists of some English questions, an essay, and some math questions. Basically the purpose of this, is so kids going to certain colleges don’t have to take the entrance exam to determine what English and what math class they will go into. Honestly, I don’t get the point of having every junior take it. Why not just let the kids who are going to the colleges where it is required take it when the colleges serve it, instead of having all the students take it?

Then there is this other test that we are taking that I am sure has a math part and it might have a English part; I am not sure exactly what it’s name is, though I do know it is part of this whole common core thing (which I hate). This is the first year that they are having juniors take it, and we even did a practice one in math. Yeah, that sounds great, but really it just made everyone feel really dumb. Luckily though they are using this test to compare  scores by different years and since this is the first year that it is being administered they have nothing to compare us to. Sorry the juniors of next year.

Then there is the SATs (did you hear about all the changes they are doing to that test), the ACTs, APs, and college applications. To sum it all up: Junior year is not fun. When did I agree to this?

If you wanted to read about all the SAT changes here is the link: http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/05/living/sat-test-changes-schools/index.html (to get to the specifics of how the tests will change you have to scroll down a bit)

No More Homework

This really is a terrible subject to talk about but let’s do it anyways.

The topic of senior year was what we were talking and reading about recently and the goods and bars of making it optional or getting rid of it.  I think this would not only be interesting to try but to se what happens and if it is worth it or not.  I think people, especially teachers and administrations, should rethink giving kids homework, especially before high school.  For so long it had just been the social norm and acceptable for kids to have several hours of homework a night, even kindergarteners.  I don’t want to nit pick on times because that isn’t the main problem.  I understand that the point of homework for teachers is to help kids further understand and learn.  However if children are trying to get homework merely so that it is done and out of the way then why aren’t teachers realizing that this isn’t a “normal” kid problem and they are just overreacting.  To stop and think, “Hey, there might be a logical reason that these two things may have a connection to each other; homework isn’t helping them and they hate it.”  Even if the child is not crying over homework or drowning in misery, they still do not like it but it has always been viewed as the teacher’s job to give homework and collect it and grade it.

I think this social norm should be changed or at least experienced because there isn’t one study proving that homework gives any of the benefits it claims to for kids below high school.

If you want to hear more about this and laugh a little too, then go look at some of these videos or just search for “Alfie Kohn” on Youtube.  Links:

21 Things that will be gone in our schools in the next 10 years

school2

First of all as always, how is everyone? Hope you are doing well. Are you all excited about Christmas? I know I am!

http://blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2011/03/21-things-that-will-be-obsolete-by-2020/

Ok so I found this article and it is just so interesting. Some things I am ready to be out of school, others, well can we just hang on to them for a bit longer. Like how they say that paperback books will be gone and it will all be digital. Look I have nothing against using your little iPads for games and music and such but there is a reason that books have lasted in the form that they have for so long: they work. And another thing, I love the smell of books and being able to tell how far I am by how thick the pages are, not a little bar that tells me how much I have read. So to say in the least I will be fighting that one tooth and nail.

Also I do not agree with taking Algebra 1 out of high school, and this is coming from someone who took Geometry in freshman year, so I never took Algebra 1 in high school. Some kids just aren’t ready for Geometry in their freshman year, there’s nothing wrong with that, just let it be.

Yay for no homework! I have yet to meet a kid that says they like homework. This article says I should learn more of what I want to learn and have no homework? I am on board!

I am perfectly fine with having no AP tests and no SATs. Ugh, they are so stressful. I am taking 2 AP classes this year, and wow they are stressful, but I do like that if I pass, I don’t have to take that class in college. Digital portfolio it is.

No lockers?! Where am I supposed to put all my stuff? If it will all be on an iPad, well then I guess we don’t need lockers, but otherwise I hope they stay.

I really like the whole centralized institutions thing. If I don’t have to go to school everyday that would be awesome. It actually sounds fun to go out into the community to learn and not just be stuck behind a desk taking notes and then cramming the night before the test.

I am hoping so much that cafeteria food will be out the window. I mean, come on, some of that stuff is just plain disgusting. I never see the cafeteria workers eating it, so if they won’t eat it, why do we have to? Out with the old and in with the new and better tasting.

So go ahead and click on the link. There are other things on the link than what I  have mentioned on here. Look for the ones that you agree with or don’t. And feel free to post your opinions on any of the things they have stated, hey you can even disagree with me. =)

Hope you all have a good day! Merry early Christmas!
